The FBI announced today that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, or DCCC, was the target of another sinister cyber attack. The DCCC’s job is to raise money for Democrat candidates nationwide. Another Democrat organization, The DNC, was the victim of a cyber attack earlier this year; WikiLeaks posted thousands of embarrassing DNC emails, which led the the resignation of DNC Chairman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

What makes the DCCC cyber attack particularly troublesome for Democrats is that the hackers obtained the full list of Democrat donors, along with their addresses, social security numbers, and credit card information. These liberal donors are now themselves susceptible to identity fraud and financial sabotage.
The DCCC suggested that the hack “may have been linked to Russian hackers”. They gave no clarification as to why they believe this.
Russia denied any involvement in the scheme. A sarcastically worded statement from the Kremlin suggested that the United States should worry less about Russia and more about getting a handle on their own cyber security.
Reuters reports that the FBI was unable to determine how long the hacking had been going on, but evidence proves that the servers were compromised for at least two weeks in June.
The hackers changed the computer code in the DCCC’s website, so that when donors agreed to donate to the Democrat Party, they were then directed to a phony web site that looked exactly like the real DCCC site. Donors entered their private information and credit card information on the hacker’s system.
There is no word yet as to whether any of the donors have had their own personal finances compromised.
John Hultquist, manager of cyber espionage analysis at FireEye, said it is likely that the hackers were more interested in getting to the personal financial records of the donors than stealing money directly from the DCCC.
The DCCC said in a statement, “We have taken and are continuing to take steps to enhance the security of our network.”
Considering the competency displayed by the Democrat Party this year, I’m sure that little statement makes all those hacked donors feel so much better.
