There was a surprise performer at this week’s Country Music Awards – Beyonce Knowles. Beyonce is not particularly known for her catalog of country music songs, but she apparently has at least one, “Daddy Lessons,” which has been covered by the Dixie Chicks on their most recent tour.
On Wednesday, news started to leak out during the day leading up to the evening’s show that Beyonce would be among those performing. She took the stage with the Dixie Chicks, and received a mix of responses from viewers.
One person in attendance was Kenny Chesney, who received that night the Pinnacle Award, an honor previously presented to Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift, and no one else. It is quite an award, as it is given in recognition for exceptional contributions to the legacy of country music.
The look on Chesney’s face captured his feelings at the Beyonce performance, along with many country music fans..
The inclusion of Beyonce as one of the main performers of the festivities strikes many as odd, considering the famously strong patriotism and pro-law and order stance of the genre’s artists and fans. Most are probably aware of Beyonce’s controversial performance at the 2016 Super Bowl, when she and her dancers dressed in Black Pantheresque costumes and formed a giant “X” at one point. In addition, on a night one would figure was reserved for the best performers who have dedicated their careers to their beloved country music, it seemed strange that someone from outside the genre would be given such a prominent role.
At any rate, while many in the fawning media gave a huge thumbs-up to the inclusion of Beyonce on one of the most important nights for country music, it suffices to say that many were not so thrilled.
