Movie and television favorite Tom Selleck has announced some sad news. His mother, Martha Selleck, died on February 19 in Oak Park, CA. She was 96 years of age.
Mrs. Selleck served as president of the Motion Pictures Mothers’ Organization, which donates to the Motion Picture and Television Fund, the operator of the Woodland Hills Home and Hospital for retired members of the industry.
Speaking of his mother when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986, Tom said “She’s always been there and always been very fair — even when she said, ‘Wait till your father gets home,’ which usually was for good reason. And she made great cherry pie.”
Mrs. Selleck grew up in Detroit, and was married to Tom’s father, Robert D. Selleck, from 1941 until his death in 2001.
Mr. and Mrs. Selleck, along with a young Tom (born 1945) and his brother Bob (born 1944), moved to Sherman Oaks, CA in 1948.
Martha and Robert raised their children to live clean and upright lives. They asked each of their children not to smoke, drink, or swear until the age of 21. For fulfilling this promise they were given a gold watch.
Tom is a proud Christian and will certainly lean on his faith during this difficult time.
We send him our prayers.
