A police officer has been killed and another wounded in Paris by a gunman who was then shot dead. The attacker is believed to have deliberately targeted the officers, according to reports.

President Trump made an announcement, and called it a “terror attack.” More specific details about the nature of the attack are not yet known.

The gunman opened fire as the officers were guarding the area near the Franklin Roosevelt metro station on Thursday night at the centre of the street which is popular with tourists. An eyewitness said a man got out of a car and began shooting “with a Kalashnikov”.

Police said the officer who was killed was in a car which had been stopped at a red light by the attacker. But other reports from French media say only two shots were fired in the incident near the Marks and Spencer store and a second attacker could be still at large.
