When Ivanka Trump moved to Washington D.C. with her family, she claimed that she would not have any formal role in her father’s White House. That’s why it came as a surprise this week when it was announced that Ivanka is getting her very own office inside the White House.
Politico reported that Ivanka is taking an office on the second floor of the West Wing in a space next to senior adviser Dina Powell, who was recently promoted to a position on the National Security Council. Ivanka’s attorney Jamie Gorelick said that her new role will be as President Donald Trump’s “eyes and ears” while providing broad-ranging advice, not just limited to women’s empowerment issues.
Liberals are already furious about this, as they think Ivanka has not done enough to eliminate conflicts of interest.
“Having an adult child of the president who is actively engaged in the work of the administration is new ground,” Gorelick conceded. “Our view is that the conservative approach is for Ivanka to voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not.”
Sources close to Ivanka say that she sees nothing wrong with the arrangement, since this is the way she has worked with her father for years as a senior official at the Trump Organization and as Trump’s partner on “The Apprentice.”
“I will continue to offer my father my candid advice and counsel, as I have for my entire life,” Ivanka said in a statement. “While there is no modern precedent for an adult child of the president, I will voluntarily follow all of the ethics rules placed on government employees.”
