Representative John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, has been pushing a slavery reparations bill in Congress for two decades. He is still going strong.
Conyers and the members of the Congressional Black Caucus are re-introducing the bill. Other Democrats have joined the effort to support the pro-reparation legislation.
The Washington Examiner reports the legislation would “set up a commission to…examine the possibility of reparations,” and that the bill is a response to the “fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States.” While the statements on the cruel inhumanity of slavery are true, the argument over reparations becomes a complicated issue.
According to the Examiner, “the bill proposed last year found that 4 million blacks were enslaved in the U.S. from 1619 to 1865. It said the commission would examine the entire history of slavery, and then make recommendations on whether the U.S. government should apologize for slavery, and whether reparation payments are warranted.”
Slavery was outlawed 150 years ago, making is nearly impossible to blame citizens for the horrendous acts of their possible ancestors. America is a melting pot, with white, black, and every race of people having immigrated to the country long after slavery.
The Conservative Tribune points out that even the liberal New York Times has criticized the reparations bill, saying the money would “have to come from taxpayers, who have no culpability for those past crimes and little, if any, of the benefit.”
John Conyers and the Congressional Black Caucus should be focusing less on reparations, and more on the issues that affect the black community today. The violence in Chicago this year is more than double that of New York and Los Angeles combined – and it’s violence that largely affects the black community.
Even Obama is against reparations!
In 2008 Obama told the Associated Press, “I have said in the past – and I’ll repeat again – that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed.”
When groups like Black Lives Matter are causing violence and hatred, liberal Democrats refuse to condemn the group. Yet Representatives like John Conyers have no problem wasting tax payers time and money based on the sins of the past.
