Things have turned ugly between Donald Trump and Fox News.
When Trump hinted that he might skip the GOP debates this week because Megyn Kelly would be one of the moderators, Fox News issued a scalding, sarcastic press release. Responding to Trump’s assertions that Kelly had treated him unfairly, the Fox statement read,
“We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president — a nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”
The Fox statement was surprisingly caustic, and deliberately meant to demean Trump. The billionaire candidate was not amused, and hit back with his own brash style.
Trump proclaimed at a rally in Iowa, “I was all set to do the debate. I came here to do the debate. But when they sent out the wise guy press releases a little while ago, by some PR person, along with Roger Ailes, I said ‘BYE BYE’!”
When a reporter then asked Trump if Ted Cruz’s surge in the polls was scaring him off from another debate, the real estate mogul snapped back, “No, no, no, no! Excuse me, just so you understand, I’ve done six debates. Six debates. According to every single poll, I won every single debate.”
Many of Trump’s supporters agree that Megyn Kelly was unfair to him during the first debate. Her first question to Trump asked about his temperament and treatment of women, and included this statement: “You’ve called women you don’t like ‘fat pigs,’ ‘dogs,’ ‘slobs’ and ‘disgusting animals.’ Your Twitter account has several disparaging comments about women’s looks.”
In classic Trump style, he interrupted her and said, “That was only about Rosie O’Donnell”.
His supporters went wild.
It was at that moment, it became clear to many that this was no ordinary politician. This was a man who was willing to break every rule in politics, to be unabashedly politically incorrect, and to give a voice to millions of Americans who are sick of the “wussyfication” of America.
The Fox News press release this week was ridiculous, unfair and unprofessional. The attempt to make fun of Trump fell flat among many conservatives who have been loyal to the network. And by making Trump leave the debates, Fox News is crippling their own ratings.
Trump is a politician like no other we have ever seen. No Republican in their right mind would ever go to war with Fox News. Trump is doing so, and he appears to be winning.
